| Finishing Braided Cords |
| This is my favorite method of finishing off braided cords. It is simple, fast, and secure. |
|
| You will need - |
- A cord at least an inch longer than the finished length of the necklace
- A crimp clasp with a 4mm hole
- Scotch tape
- Sharp scissors
- Jewelers glue; I use G-S Hypo Cement because I like the needle fine tip
- Needle nose pliers
|
| Depending on the scissors you choose you may want a fine tipped craft knife or manicure scissors as well.
Parchment paper is also usefull. |
 |
| First, you will take a piece of tape and wrap it around one end of the cord just below the knot.
Wrap the tape tightly. You want to compress the cord and make it as narrow as possible. The tape
will make it possible to get the cord thru the hole in the clasp. |
 |
| Cut the knot off right at the base. |
 |
| Using the tape as a 'needle', thread on both pieces of the clasp. I chose to use the
entire length of this cord for my necklace. If you want to only use part of your cord simply wrap a piece of tape
around the cord where you wish to end the piece you are working on. This will keep the remaining
cord from unraveling as well as getting it ready to have a clasp put on it when you are ready to use it. |
 |
| With the needle nose pliers squeeze the crimp area of the clasp firmly. Then, insert the
tip of the glue into the spaces between the clasp and the cord. Squeeze some glue in thru both the bottom
and the top of the clasp. At this point I use a small piece of parchment paper to rest the cord ends on so
any glue that leaks out won't get on my table. |
 |
| Let the cord dry for whatever time is specified by the glue you are using. When it is dry,
take your scissors and cut the excess cords sticking out of the ends of the clasp. Use a craft knife or
manicure scissors to trim the ends flush with the clasp if necessary. |
 |
| Congratulations! You now have a finished cord to use as a unique way to display a
pendant or to wear as a beautiful piece of jewelry in its own right. |
